Video is fast becoming the medium of choice for the internet, with low cost webcams, video cameras and video-enabled mobile devices combining with Web 2.0 applications to enable rapid sharing of video content. Video has long been used by the Open University and other universities for the delivery of teaching and learning materials for distance learning courses.
Now all HEIs have the potential to deliver video content over the web, but there are pedagogical/ technical /legal/ accessibility and other issues to be addressed, from capture through to delivery, and choices to be made in terms of which approaches and technologies to adopt.

ViE-SiG will discuss and share:

- the pedagogic opportunities of using visual media within education
- the key concerns such as the technical and workflow analysis when using visual media on an institutional level
- an effective and sustainable mechanism of communicating best practice to the community at large.

ViE-SiG will also encourage inter-institutional collaboration and cooperation in this area.

As part of our remit ViE-SiG aims to further promote and exploit the use of existing video archive repositories as well as new resources as they become available across a variety of institutions and organisations, which operate within the educational market place.

The main purpose of the group therefore is to share experiences between individuals and institutions and develop a regularly updated ‘Good Practice Guide’ for general distribution.

Planned remit of ViE SIG

The group will develop knowledge in the area of video in education by addressing the following;
  • Technology
    Considerations for effective media capture; media storage; post production editing and retrieval; delivery methods; integration with other electronic resources, including existing repositories such as:
  • **Pedagogy**
    Develop and promote sound pedagogical principles in designing these types of materials for educational purposes; Develop reference models for educational use through the use of case studies and evaluations; Develop a research map which identifies areas of interests.
  • Infrastructure
    Identify considerations concerning storage, archiving and retrieval; Deploy / develop / communicate sound metadata protocols; Identify and where necessary develop robust technical support models and strategies.
  • Policy & Legal
    Provide guidance on issues concerning copyright and IPR; Develop/provide specific guidance on current/emerging technologies, as required, such as YouTube, Web 2.0/3.0 etc..; Provide guidance concerning ERA Plus licence and in particular how educational institutions can best utilities these areas for maximum benefit to its students and staff; Provide practical guidance on how to address accessibility and usability criteria when deploying rich media to ensure compliance with current legislation (DDA, SENDA).
